Private companies enlisted to administer Medicaid ride program

People in the two most populous areas of the state who rely on HHSC for rides to and from their healthcare appointments soon will get to know new transportation providers. HHSC has signed contracts with two companies, one of which will set up and provide rides in the Houston/Beaumont area and another which will provide those services in the Dallas/Fort Worth area starting this spring.

As part of the services available through Medicaid, people with coverage who do not have a way to get to their Medicaid health care visits can get a ride to and from those appointments. HHSC sets up these non-emergency rides in most areas of the state and administers the program. The new companies HHSC has hired will be the first private companies to set up and provide these rides on a full-risk basis, meaning HHSC will pay each company a set amount each month in exchange for the company setting up rides and other transportation-related services for the people enrolled in Medicaid or the Children with Special Health Care Needs program. The set fee will be based on the number of Medicaid members living in the area the company is responsible for.

People covered by Medicaid who live in the two service delivery areas soon will be receiving mail from their new transportation provider that tells them where to call to set up rides. Here’s more about the new transportation companies:

  • Houston/Beaumont area Beginning March 15, Medical Transportation Management (MTM) will begin providing rides for Medicaid and Children with Special Health Care Needs clients who live in the following counties: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Hardin, Harris, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, Tyler, Walker, Waller and Wharton. Call toll-free 855-687-4786 to set up a ride.
